FedWriters NSF Scientific Web Communications Writer in Alexandria, Virginia

Job Title: Media Specialist

Job Summary:

This position is in support of the communication, planning, and coordination of the 75th anniversary of the Graduate Research Fellowships Program (GRFP) in the Division of Graduate Education (DGE). This will involve collaborating with NSF staff to identify contributors and participants, developing content for web and print-based delivery, and hosting a year-long series of celebratory web-based and in-person events. Working for the EDU/OAD and EDU/EES teams at the NSF involves shaping the future of STEM education, fostering innovation, and advancing scientific discovery to inspire the next generation of thinkers and problem solvers.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Utilizing NSF's web content management systems to facilitate corrections, updates, and other content changes to information published on public-facing or internal-facing NSF websites
  • Copying edits, audits, and organizes existing EDU/DGE/GRFP web content
  • Creating visually appealing page layouts using NSF-provided content types on new.nsf.gov, including incorporating images and videos when appropriate
  • Ensuring content authored and submitted by DGE staff is properly routed, assigned, and reviewed
  • Serving as a resource for staff in DGE who are drafting and submitting information for publication on NSF websites
  • Working to ensure edits and other changes are reviewed promptly by EDU leadership and internal NSF stakeholders
  • Reviewing, editing, and publishing content submitted by DGE staff for publication on NSF's internal and external-facing websites
  • Collaborating with NSF staff to develop a comprehensive plan to share stories about the GRFP with internal and external audiences
  • Collaborating with NSF staff to develop materials that can be used by staff to "market" participation in the GRFP to students and organizations currently underrepresented in the GRFP applicant pool
  • Collaborating with NSF staff to develop a full-year series of celebratory events to mark the 75th anniversary of the GRFP (2025)
  • Preparing and delivering content via the web and in print to support the celebratory series
  • Assisting NSF by hosting online and in-person events during the 75th anniversary year
  • Regularly analyzing and reporting on metrics and analytics for web pages
  • Utilizing analytics and metrics to help maximize the effectiveness of GRFP's communications products and proposing changes when appropriate

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance
  • 4+ years of applicable professional experience in the following:
    • Editing and writing content describing complex scientific topics and research in plain language, so it is accessible and understandable for the public
    • Copy editing and proofing written content for publication using the Associated Press stylebook
    • Using Google Analytics or other web analytics applications to assess page views and other metrics and using that data to recommend future communications products and plans
    • Collaborating with clients to plan a media campaign for a specific purpose
    • Interviewing SMEs and developing original content
    • Generating engaging content for different types of audiences
    • Planning and hosting events online and in-person

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday - Friday, normal business hours
  • Work to be performed remotely
  • The potential for occasional travel to NSF offices in Alexandria, VA
