Job Description Summary:This position performs whole atmosphere model and upper atmosphere model simulations and data analysis to understand the temperature, composition, dynamics, and electrodynamics of the thermosphere and ionosphere systems.
The models will be the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with a thermosphere/ionosphere eXtention (WACCM-X) and the thermosphere-ionosphere-electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIE-GCM).
The data will include various data sources such as thermospheric composition and electron density data from the Global-scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission, thermospheric composition data from the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) limb measurements onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite, data from the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) mission, data from incoherent scatter radars, COSMIC-2, and ground GPS total electron content.
Research is directed by an NCAR staff member and includes pre-defined research and deliverables. Position Details: Visa Sponsored Job:Yes

What You Will Do Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.
Perform model runs, analyze diagnostics for interpretations of results, and compare with observational results.
Analyze datasets, including but not limited to thermosphere composition datasets, electron density and ion drift data, and GPS TEC; compare with model simulated results.
Write reports and publish papers.
Prepare for and attend scientific conferences.

Education & Experience REQUIRED:
Must have a Ph. D. in physics, space science, atmospheric physics, or a related field within less than five years of the application date.
Education & Experience Desired but Not Required:
Experience with Python, Matlab, or Mathematica
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:
Ability to pursue thermospheric and ionospheric physics research, including skills in modeling, data analysis and scientific computing.
Strong computational skills.
Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems (clusters and supercomputers).
Proficient in Fortran and IDL programming languages
Good communication skills in presenting research
Ability to write scientific reports and articles.
