Position Summary:

Plans, directs, coordinates and oversees all programmatic aspects of the Blood/Apheresis Donor Operations (both in-center and mobile blood drives) to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency and safety of all blood products collected at COH. Ensures optimum customer satisfaction and compliance with standards of multiple regulatory and licensing agencies. Coordinates closely with the Blood Donor Recruitment to ensure adequate donor base.

Specific responsibilities include operations management, analysis, standard operating procedure (SOP) development, donor safety, compliance with regulatory agencies AABB, CAP/CLIA, FDA, CPDH and JC) and personnel management for licensed and non-licensed staff.

Project Management

  • Review and analyze current processes, plan and implement process improvement as needed; develop/revise and implement SOPs; ensure competency of RNs, LVNs, Donor Technicians and support staff, participate in operational meetings. Investigate and follow-up of post-donation information reports, product recalls and donor “look backs”. Develops process and equipment validation plans and oversees actual validations. Provide leadership for special projects involving Collections program.

Program Management

  • Oversee functional program with 30 staff and 11 direct reports. Ensure close working relationship between blood product collections and donor recruitment functions.

  • Maintain SOP relevance and accuracy, and ensure readiness of program for regulatory/licensing compliance. Assist with development of capital budgets and maintain knowledge of emerging blood collection/automation technologies.

Personnel Management

  • Work with operational supervisors to hire and retain quality nursing and administrative staff and provide avenues for their continued professional growth through training, in-service and other educational opportunities.

  • Foster good interpersonal relationship between co-workers and manage conflict resolution as needed. Use progressive discipline principles as appropriate.


  • Ensure compliance and accuracy of Collections procedures, review and oversee maintenance of all collection records.

  • Evaluate machine function and efficiency as needed. Meet with company representatives/vendors concerning modification, maintenance and service of equipment.

  • Participate in QC, QA and quality improvement procedures. Maintain and collect department reports, records and statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes. Coordinate and communicate with the Compliance Section and other managers to ensure compliance with regulatory accrediting agencies and implementation of QA program.

Basic Education, Experience and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • BSN (Bachelors in Nursing) required.

  • Five years recent patient care experience in donor apheresis operations, therapeutic operation and/or blood banking operations.

  • Minimum 2 years management experience in hospital/health care environment

  • Excellent human relations and oral/written communications skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate meetings, delegate tasks, maintain staffing levels, prepare reports, maintain employee records and problem solve.

  • Competency in personal computer and computer peripheral equipment.

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Current California RN License

  • American Heart Association BLS
