Scope of Job
Under the moderate supervision of the principal investigator and senior laboratory staff, and with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, will perform cellular and molecular biology laboratory procedures in the Department of Human Genetics and South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute’s Stem Cell Laboratory. These laboratory procedures are part of the ongoing research projects on novel stem cell-based methods in human disease gene discovery and include complex diseases such as diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. Will also be part of a large collaborative research team and will have extraordinary opportunities to learn cutting-edge research methodologies including cellular reprogramming, cellular differentiation, cell-based in-vitro disease modeling, high-throughput cellular phenotyping, and bulk and single-cell multiomics technologies.
May supervise the work of others.
Description of Duties
• Performs cellular and molecular biology laboratory procedures including cell culture, optical microscopy, immunocytochemistry, extraction, purification, and analysis of DNA , RNA , and Proteins.
• Assist in cellular reprogramming and cellular differentiation experiments.
• Maintain and update sample inventories of cryopreserved cells, and frozen cell products.
• Perform assays on cultured cells and tissue samples.
• Records experimental observations and prepares reports of research findings.
• Assists in designing and optimization of cellular and molecular assays.
• Perform and assist with daily, weekly, and yearly maintenance of the tissue culture rooms and general laboratory areas.
• Collects, compiles, and analyzes research data.
• Prepares, collects, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records for experiments.
• Uses statistical methods and relational databases to analyze data sets.
• Prepares or assists with preparing reports of research findings.
• Assists with planning, developing, coordinating, and administering research projects.
• May assist in designing and creating computer programs for research applications.
• Operates and maintains equipment and automated systems including scheduling of regular maintenance services with outside vendors.
•May train users on the operation and data management of research equipment.
• Maintains inventory of research related material.
• Complies with all State and University policies.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field from an accredited University.

Required Experience

Preferred Experience
Experience in performing cell culture and molecular biology techniques.
Equipment
Knowledge of statistical concepts and methods and their application to research analysis, of measurement, testing, and evaluation, and of research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies. Skilled in conducting qualitative and quantitative research and in using computers, software, and statistical tools and programs. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee research projects, evaluate research data, ensure the development of measuring instruments with respect to reliability, relevance, and validity, interpret and publish research findings, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.
