The Opportunity

This position works out of our Santa Clara, CA or Temecula, CA location in the Vascular division.

Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease. Our extensive portfolio includes drug-eluting stents, bare metal stents, guide wires, balloon dilatation catheters, imaging catheters and software, vessel closure devices and peripheral stents.

Job Purpose

This position requires academic training in polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, biomaterials, or a related field and will work closely with R&D Mechanical Engineers, Product Development Engineers, and Analytical Chemists. This scientist will provide technical leadership and guidance towards the successful design and testing of medical devices, including assistance in material selection, chemical characterization, restricted substance evaluation and sterilization compatibility. The ideal candidate will excel in polymer chemistry, structure-property relationships, and material characterization, with a foundational understanding of biology. Additional job responsibilities will be to analyze root causes of a wide variety of failures related to issues arising in design, development, manufacturing, and/or use of Abbott products, support regulatory filing related to biomaterials, and design and execute research studies.

What You’ll Work On

  • Participate as a technical expert throughout the product development life cycle.

  • Determine clear and specific priorities on the development strategy for new products.

  • Be responsible for writing and coordinating biomaterial sections of regulatory submissions.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional departments, including process engineering, manufacturing, quality, pre-clinical, clinical, and regulatory, to identify and coordinate contracts with external consultants and/or academic advisors on product development and process optimization.

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or related field.

  • At least 5 years of experience in polymer chemistry, biomaterials, or medical device product development.

  • Experience with FDA regulations is preferred.

  • Understanding of material biocompatibility and experience with restricted substance evaluations is a plus.

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.

  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD degree in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or related field - Highly Desired.

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,500.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
