SUNY Upstate Medical University Radiation Therapist in Syracuse, New York

Job Summary:

  • Deliver prescribed dose of radiation according to physician prescription and treatment plan as directed by the Radiation Oncologist

  • Perform CT Simulation procedures in preparation of patient treatment plans

  • Determines the impact of therapeutic interventions on the patient's condition and recognizes the patient's progress towards meeting the desired outcomes

  • Performs operation of the therapeutic equipment, proper patient positioning, use of treatment devices, monitoring of the patient during the procedure and related clerical duties

  • Document treatment delivery and verify recorded dose with ARIA

  • Report near miss's and/or misadministration's per department policy

  • Perform accurate charge capture to reflect procedures and treatments provided

  • Comply with patient safety standards to included procedure verification, time out, patient consent

  • Monitors patients clinical progress and refers patients to medical or nursing staff for appropriate intervention; recognize radiation reaction and report reactions to nurse and/or Attending Physician

  • Report patient concerns and missed treatment appointments to Attending Physician; Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to the unique needs of the oncology patient

  • Participate in department and/or Upstate quality initiatives

  • Performs daily equipment warm-up and quality assurance procedures

  • Evaluates and assesses treatment machine operations; recognizes machine malfunctions and reports them to Chief Therapist and Medical Physicist

  • Ability to perform procedures regarding quality assurance, emergency shutdown and guidelines that pertain to the operation manuals for equipment

  • Adhere to strict radiation safety guidelines and department policy when performing radiation therapy treatment and imaging

  • Meets and adhere to internal quality controls, organizational standards, department policies and procedures

  • Communicates clearly and concisely with all members of the health care team, patients, and families with effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of quality improvement, patient satisfaction and a Patient First philosophy

  • Maintain CPR certification and RT License; Assists in training and evaluation of student therapists when necessary

  • Assist other members of the office department, which may include briefly covering the front desk, rooming a patient, answering the phones, etc.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to be a team player

  • Provide coverage to other clinical offices operated by Upstate Radiation Oncology, as needed=

  • All other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in Radiation Therapy or completion of American Medical Association approved certificate program; New York State licensure and RTT (Radiation Therapist Technologist) or eligible required. Current CPR certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross is required.

Monday - Friday; 8:00-4:30 (Exact hours can vary based on patient volume)
